Study Centre at the Institute of Nutritional Sciences at Friedrich Schiller University Jena

In spring 2018, a study centre was set up at the Institute of Nutritional Sciences at Friedrich Schiller University, which consists of three examination rooms, a waiting area and office space for staff. The study centre is managed by Dr Christine Dawczynski. The team includes a study doctor, nurses, doctoral students, Master's students, laboratory technicians and a secretariat.

Human studies make it possible to analyse the relationships between nutrition, metabolism, biomarkers/risk factors, genetic factors and age- and nutrition-related diseases in healthy and sick people.

In the nutrition-associated human studies at the Jena Study Centre, the influence of nutrients, complex foods, nutritional concepts and certain forms of nutrition on the development (prevention) and influence (therapy) of nutrition-related diseases (e.g. cardiovascular diseases, obesity, type II diabetes mellitus, chronic inflammatory joint diseases) is investigated. In addition to intervention studies, observational studies are also carried out.

The team at the Jena Study Centre specialises in the development and validation of nutritional concepts. The concepts consist of complex daily menu plans that specify a defined energy and nutrient intake. The influence of implementation on cardiovascular risk factors (blood lipids, inflammation markers, blood pressure, body composition, etc.) is evaluated in intervention studies. Communication materials are then developed to disseminate the information to the target groups.

Studies at the study centre at the Institute of Nutritional Sciences at Friedrich Schiller University Jena

  • Anthropometric measurements
  • Examination of body composition (bioelectrical impedance examination)
  • Non-invasive pulse wave analysis
  • Broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) on the calcaneus for assessment of bone health
  • Continuous glucose measurement using Abbott sensors
  • Nutrition protocols and lifestyle questionnaires
  • Dental health examinations in cooperation with PD Dr U. Späthe-Schulze
  • Analysis of fatty acid distribution in human samples (plasma lipids, erythrocyte lipids, breast milk) and measurement of volatile fatty acids in stool samples using gas chromatography
